SCORE! Ak mags and ammo...
 

So tonight I was eyeballing another of my favorite sites and cames across someone selling 695 rounds of 7.62x39 ammo, mostly Chinese. The guy happened to be about 10 miles from me so I sent him an email and told him I'd take it.

10 minutes later I find another of this guys posts, this time selling (11) 30 round magazines and 2 East German mag pouches. 8 of the mags are brand new and never fired. I sent him a 2nd email and asked if he'd do a package deal if I met him tonight.

He quickly replied and I just got home from meeting him...695 rounds of ammo, 11 mags, 35 stripper clips and 2 pouches FTF for $300 :9536::9536::9536:

I see by the two solid lines on the bottom of the mags that those may be Yugo mags. Can you post a picture showing the follower of one of the mags?

Those are Chinese mags just like the "yugo" mags selling at ammoman without the China stamp on the floorplate.

Probably not. It looks like the mags in the pics have the China stamp on the floor plate. That stamp should bring $20 - $30 each. Especially since the current "yugo" mags on the market don't have the stamp but are identical in every other way. Nice score!

That looks like an excellent purchase plus the fact that you got to examine all of it before you bought! Those kind of deals don't happen everyday! Right place right time.

Ummm....no. Not necessarily.

After our benevolent govt banned the commercial sale of steel core "armor piercing" 7.62x39 ammo, there were tons & tons of Chinese stuff imported with much friendlier (kinder, gentler, more Politically Correct) lead core HP & FMJ bullets. I got a couple cases back in the early 1990s from Paragon Sales. Copper washed steel cases, but lead core boolits.

Most of it is dated from the 1960's so I am fairly sure it is steel core...

Oh......and those mags can be converted to bolt-hold open on the last round.

Search out the thread or just take one apart and grind down the bumps on the inside to allow the follower to come completely up to the top.

First off, I'm not trying to be a bozo here (although it DOES come pretty naturally to me!:111:).

Please see the picture I've attached to this message. Top left image shows a neodymium super-maggot (stolen from our fridge) attached to the copper washed bullet from some 1993 headstamped Chinese ammo (steel copper washed case, berdan primed, labeled as lead core).

Maggot sticks-->AP steel core...right?

Not quite.

A lot of mil-surplus ammo has a mild steel jacket over some sort of core. Some cores are mild steel, lead, or even armor piercing (typically a hardened steel insert, as is used in the older US "black tip" .30-06 rounds). I think that even some of the current Wolf or Silver Bear ammo has a copper plated mild steel jacket.

Top right image shows the base of the bullet, with some scratches I put in it.

This DOES NOT mean that the entire core is lead. Some Soviet sniper ammo for the Dragunov, and I think some of their 5.45x39 ammo, has an air space up front, a steel insert, then a lead "cap" at the base of the bullet.

I used my trusty Dremel tool & cutting disc to chop through the side of the bullet & peel it away from the core (see bottom left image).

Then I smacked the soft lead core a few times with a 16 oz hammer - it deforms very easily.

The "magnet test" is good to see if the bullet contains any steel, but it alone does not prove that the bullet has a steel core, nor does it prove that the steel core is AP.

Even mild steel cores will hurt if properly applied. Mild steel was used in a lot of the pre-ban Chinese ammo. There IS some AP 7.62x39 ammo being currently used over in warm sandy places by (eastern European, I think) security contractors. They find it very nice for punching through the door of the vehicle they're riding in, through the door/body of the target vehicle, and then into/through the bodies of the target (threat/terrorist/bad guy). Lead core or mild steel core can't be trusted to do this.

Even a mild steel core, however, will pop right through Spectra (hack/yuck/ptoooeh) based armor plates. Spectra may stop lead cored bullets, but not steel.

I guess it all depends on what your target will be, eh?

All that glitters is not gold...all that sticks to a magnet is not steel core.
